People love their pets. In 2020, the pet industry sold $103.6 billion in products.

In such a large industry, how are you supposed to know what products are actually good?  Online reviews aren’t written by people who’ve used the products for a long period of time.

I’ve bought a ton of products for my dog, Chewbacca.  This page lists  products that have actually ended up being really good over a long period of time.

All of these products ended up working really well, keeping my dog safe, and I highly recommend them.

Miles Tactical Cobra Buckle Dog Collar

Miles Tactical Dog Collar

Benefits:

  • The single best investment I’ve made for my dog.  This one is a must for any dog.
  • The thickness of this collar helps protect your dog’s neck from bites. I have a friend that says this collar saved his dog’s life.
  • There is a handle on the collar, so you can easily hold your dog.
  • You can easily adjust this collar, but it won’t loosen / need readjustment as your dog moves or pulls.
  • It has two rings: One for your dog tags, one to attach your leash.
  • You can add up to 2 custom velcro patches to the outside of the collar.
  • Easy quick release to get it on and off.

1.5`` Custom Patch (With Your Dog's Name / Phone)

custom dog patch for collar

Benefits:

  • These patches have velcro backing that attaches securely to your Miles Tactical Collar.
  • If your dog loses his dog tags, you have backup information on the collar itself.
  • Unlike a dog tag, this is hard to lose.
  • Helps people see your dog’s name easily.

Important Tips:

  • Reference your dog’s Miles Tactical collar for the correct size. (The 1.5″ width by 4″ length is the correct size for my collar.)

KONG Traffic Padded Handle Quick Control Leash 4'

Kong Dog Leash

Benefits:

  • This leash has a separate handle that allows you to keep your dog at the idea heel position.
  • It allows you to attach a backup connector (below) to their regular collar for insurance (in case one collar breaks), potentially saving your dog’s life if one attachment/collar breaks.

Prong Collar (Herm Sprenger)

Prong collar

Benefits:

  • If your dog loves to pull you on walks, this will teach your dog to heel perfectly – almost instantly.
  • This will not hurt or damage your dog’s neck if you use it correctly. (Try it on your own neck/arm/leg to see.)

Important Tips:

  • This goes above your dog’s existing collar during walks. Do not take off your dog’s regular collar when using this.
  • Make sure you buy the Herm Sprenger brand, and make sure it’s the stainless steel version (not the chrome plated version). A lot of the cheap knockoffs are made from cheap materials and can break / rust easily.
  • Buy the correct size using the sizing chart on Amazon, or try one on in a store.

Dog Collar Backup Clips

8 multi-color dog collar backup clips

Benefits:

  • This clip provides a backup connection, so if your main leash clip breaks, your dog will still be attached, and won’t run into the street.
  • You can also attach this to both your dog’s collar and a prong collar simultaneously.
  • Here’s a picture of how everything goes together.
  • This is a set of 8. Give some of the extras to friends. Maybe you’ll save a life!

Dog Tag Silencer

Blue dog tag silencer. Words on it read: Lets play

Benefits:

  • Keeps your dog tag and license from banging into each other and making noise (perhaps while you’re trying to sleep!)
  • Dog tags and licenses fall off all the time. This helps prevent that.

Treat (& Poop Bag) Bag

Dog treat bag

Benefits:

  • It’s essential to reward your dog during training.
  • I think it’s critical to always reward your dog for performing important safety commands such as come, leave it, and drop it.
  • Attaches to your belt or waist.
  • There’s a couple loops for to attach a carabiner, if you prefer.

Important Tips:

  • Use good judgement when going to a dog park. With some dogs, the presence of food can start a dog fight.
  • Never feed other dogs without the owner’s permission.

Nutribites Single Ingredient Freeze Dried Beef Liver (Costco)

nutribites dired liver dog treats bag

Benefits:

  • This is a quality, single ingredient treat.  In other words, it’s nothing but meat.
  • Your dog will not get sick of it.
  • Your dog will work for it.
  • Comparable single-ingredient freeze dried treats cost around $50-$60 per bag at pet stores!
  • Costco occasionally has this product in stock this for $10.99, but it sells out fast and they typically don’t restock for months. (I bought 20 bags the last time they had it.)
  • Resellers have this on Amazon for a slight markup.

Long Line Training Leash (20' to 30')

Long line training leash

Benefits:

  • Gives your dog more freedom during training, without being off-leash.
  • Allows you to train at parks that don’t allow off-leash dogs.

EZ Educator Dog Training Collar

Dog training collar

Benefits:

  • This is not a “shock” collar, it’s an e-collar.  When used correctly, this is one of the most useful tools for dogs that won’t listen to commands – and hence tend to get themselves into dangerous situations.
  • Includes 3 stimulation options: An audio tone, a vibration, and an (adjustable level) electrical stimulation
  • Always use this safely and correctly. The electrical stimulant should never hurt your dog, but just get it’s attention. Try it on yourself first. If it hurts, you’re doing it wrong.
